“I suggest you stop unless you want to see more hunters.”
She swiveled her body toward the male’s voice and stared—wide-eyed—at a figure high up in a tree. Eirien stood defensively, ready to break into a sprint at any moment. The man in the tree began to climb down; he would hang from a limb with one hand—his bow clutched in the other—and would drop to the branch below it. He moved rather unhurriedly in his descent. To Eirien it felt like an eternity.
As his feet hit the ground the human lifted his head to look at her. It had been a long time since Eirien had been so close to another being.
“…What do you want?” she asked reluctantly as the man merely stood there.
The stranger’s face took on a hint of a smile, “I don’t want anything from you. Unless you’re offering something interesting.” His smile faded, “I’m simply trying to prevent any unnecessary bloodshed. And a great number of humans seeking blood are wandering this part of the woods. Seeing as you are an elf, I imagine you would not like to cross paths with them.”
The relatively tall, lean human bent down and ran his fingers across the earth. He filtered soil and some leaves through his grasp as if inspecting it. The stranger seemed rather unbothered by Eirien’s presence.
“Be on your way, then,” he said as he gradually returned to his full height. “Go in a different direction. Or…don’t. It’s up to you, after all.” »
